Apprenticeship Programmes

In 2004 seventeen students graduated from a Government and Industry partnered apprenticeship programme for the electrical trade. Universal Electric played a pivotal role in establishing this programme. In the early 1990's they became aware of the need to create qualified electricians. They subsequently became involved with the National Training Board (NTB) and the Bermuda College to create a certificate programme for students already working in the field. Employers allow students time participate in the courses while the NTB finances their tuition and the College provides the instructors and facilities. Over fives years, by attending one day a week, students work their way through a modular, self paced programme that results in either a certificate or associates degree. They are also eligible to sit a North American recognized certificate of qualification examination.
Universal Electric continues to be at the forefront of the programme with General Manager Ray Beaulne presently chairing the Occupational Advisory Board and sitting on the NTB. Graduates are under no obligation to continue to work for their employer and the main goal of the programme is to ensure qualified technicians who understand standards and code.
